UA EARNS NO. 7 SEED AT SEC TOURNAMENT
A trio of late season series wins against Top 20 teams has landed the Alabama Crimson Tide a berth in the 2007 SEC Tournament at Regions Park in Hoover. The Crimson Tide went 7-5 in its last 12 SEC games, which included series wins over No. 4 South Carolina, No. 6 Arkansas and No. 20 Mississippi State. ALABAMA (31-24, 15-15 SEC) tied Florida for sixth place in the overall league standings with a 15-15 conference record. The Crimson Tide closed the season with five wins in its last seven SEC games, including its first road series win of the year at Mississippi State to close out the season. During its last 12 games, Alabama batted .297 (122-for-411) with 15 home runs and 67 RBI. Bama averaged 6.2 runs and 10.2 hits per game over its final 12 SEC games. Salem led the offense with a .396 (21-for-53) average with two home runs and six RBI. Paiml hit .390 (16-for-41) over the last 12 games with four RBI. Bentley batted .333 (15-for-45) with five home runs and 11 RBI. Alabama will be making its 27th SEC post-season appearance at the 2007 SEC Tournament at Regions Park. The Crimson Tide has compiled a 47-38 (.553) all-time record in SEC post-season games. The 27 post-season appearances includes six SEC Championship series, a best-of-three series between the Eastern Division and Western Division champions. The winner was crowned SEC Champion for that season. Alabama’s six appearances came in 1950, 1955, 1957, 1968, 1973 and 1974. The 2007 SEC Tournament will be Alabama’s 20th tournament appearance under the current tournament setting. The Crimson Tide has compiled a 37-31 (.544) record since the tournament’s inception in 1977, including seven championships. Alabama took SEC Tournament crowns in 1983, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2002 and 2003. ARKANSAS (38-18, 18-12) is the No. 2 seed at the 2007 SEC Tournament after winning the SEC Western Division title. The Razorbacks lost its last three conference series (LSU, Alabama and Ole Miss), but still managed to win the division crown. Arkansas is the only team in SEC history to win a division title and lose four series within its division (Mississippi State, LSU, Alabama and Ole Miss). The The Razorbacks only SEC Western Division series win came at Auburn.
HEAD COACH JIM WELLS
Alabama head baseball coach Jim Wells (Northwestern State, 1980) is the winningest coach in school history. He has compiled a 554-270 (.673) record in 13 seasons at the Capstone. Overall, Wells has posted a 747-359 (.675) record in 18 seasons. He has led Alabama to two SEC Championships, three SEC Western Division titles, three CWS appearances and six SEC Tournament titles. Wells has also coached more games than any other UA coach. He broke the previous record of 822 games held by Dr. Barry Shollenberger on May 18, 2007 at Mississippi State. Wells enters the SEC Tournament with an Alabama record 824 games.
WELLS TOURNAMENT SUCCESS
Wells has led the Tide to a 32-12 (.727) record in SEC Tournament play, including six championships. The Crimson Tide won the tournament in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2002 and 2003 under Wells. Alabama has been eliminated by Ole Miss in each of its last two SEC Tournament appearances (2005 and 2006). Dating back to 2000, six of the Crimson Tide’s last seven SEC Tournament losses have come to LSU (1-3) and Ole Miss (0-3). Coach Wells has compiled a 12-3 (.800) record in SEC Tournament play against the three teams in his 2007 SEC Tournament bracket. He is 4-1 against Arkansas, 8-2 against Florida and 2-0 against South Carolina.
ALABAMA-ARKANSAS SERIES
Alabama owns a 33-19 series lead against Arkansas. The Crimson Tide won the series with the Razorbacks (W 10-0, L 12-5, W 9-5) this season in Tuscaloosa. Bama is 4-1 against Arkansas in the SEC Tournament and has eliminated the Hogs in each of the last two years. Alabama also beat Arkansas for the SEC Tournament championship in 1999 in front of the largest crowd (16,165) in tourney history.
