TUSCALOOSA ?? The Alabama Crimson Tide beat Florida State 6-3 in the first elimination game of the NCAA Softball Championships Tuscaloosa Regional.
The Seminoles head home while Alabama goes back to work, facing Cal, the loser of this morning first game against Tennessee Tech, just 30 minutes after dispatching FSU.
“Basically I thought we didn’t handle their changeup very well,” Florida State head coach Joanne Graf said. “Hitting wise, I think we waited a little too late to hit (Blair Potter) because she threw a nice hittable ball, but we weren’t patient early on and swung at some bad pitches. But once we got the hang of it we kind of put a few pitches together.”
The Tide jumped out to an early lead, scoring in the first inning and then adding two runs in the fourth and sixth inning as well as a single run in the fifth. FSU got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning and added two more at the top of the seventh before getting closed out. Kelley Montalvo sparked the Tide's offensive surge, hitting a school record three doubles in the game.
Alabama’s Blair Potter picked up the win to go to 17-3 this year while Chrissy Owens picked up her second save of the season and the 16th of her career, tying Alabama’s career mark. FSU’s Tiffany McDonald was tagged with the loss, going to 17-17 on the season.
The winner of the next game, Alabama-Cal, will face Tennessee Tech at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
