INDIANAPOLIS - University of Alabama's Aymara Albury has been selected by the NCAA as a 2007 Postgraduate Scholarship award winner. Albury is a senior member of the women's track and field team with a 3.63 GPA as a chemistry major. The scholarship is worth $7,500.
"I would really like to thank the NCAA for awarding me this scholarship," Albury said. "This is a wonderful opportunity for me to further my education and I am truly appreciative."
In her four years at the Capstone Albury was an two time SEC Champions in the shot put, six time NCAA national qualifier and she holds the school record in the shot put with a distance of 56-06.25.
"Aymara has meant a lot to this program," head coach Sandy Fowler said. "Being a six time national qualifier in the shot put is pretty impressive on her part, but even more so are her academics. To keep her GPA as high as she has along with the demands of SEC track and field is not by any means an easy task."
Albury is a native of Nassau, Bahamas where she holds the Bahamian junior and senior national record in the shot put, which she set at the 2004 World Junior Championships. She was also named the Bahamas Association Junior Female Athlete of the Year in 2004.
To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.
