NASHVILLE, TENN. ?? Four members of the University of Alabama golf team competed as individuals at the 2007 Belmont Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday at the par 71 Old Natchez Club Golf Course in Nashville.
Stewart Whitt had the best finish among the quartet. The Athens native finished tied for ninth at five under par, shooting 67-70-71/208. Matt Hughes finished 18th at two under par. He shot 68-70-73/211. Tuscaloosa’s Ben Moody finished T-29th, shooting one under par in his final round, carding 73-71-70/214, one over par, for the tournament. And Thomas Hugghins shot 78-79-73/230 to finish tied at 57th.
Though Alabama did not field a team in the tournament, nine teams competed for the team title. Austin Peay won the team championship with a 28-under-par finish (271-274-279/824). Akron’s Blake Sattler bettered Appalachian State’s Justin Metzger by a stroke to claim the individual championship. Sattler shot 70-63-67/200. The 63, tied also by Boise State’s Troy Merritt who shot it in the first round, set the course record.
