
Women?s Track Has Breakout Meet at Vanderbilt

Nashville, Tenn. ?? The University of Alabama women’s track team finally had their breakout meet of the 2007 season this weekend at the Commodore Invitation on the campus of Vanderbilt University in Nashville. The Tide won four events, picked up six NCAA regional marks and set 10 personal records this weekend.

Junior Trish Bartholomew had a career day for the Tide. She won both the 200m and 400m, set a personal record in both events and picked up NCAA regional marks in the two races. In the 200m she turned in a time of 23.50 and in the 400m she ran a 53.82. This is the second consecutive week she has picked up a NCAA regional mark in the 400m.
Crimson Tide All-American Beau Walker made her much anticipated debut this weekend after battling injures the first half of the season and she did not disappoint, finishing second behind Bartholomew in the 400m. Her time of 54.33 was a personal record, gave the Tide a one-two finish in the 400m and more importantly gave
Another Tide All-American returned to action this weekend in the high jump, Senior Miruna Mataoanu jumped for the first time this outdoor season after battling a leg injury suffered before the NCAA indoor national championships. She jumped a height of 6-01.25, which was good enough for first place, a NCAA regional mark and a new Vanderbilt Track Stadium record.
“To have Beau and Miruna’s guidance and leadership back on the track is immeasurable,” Fowler said “They both have experience on the national level and hopefully our younger girls are watching and learning.”
Freshman Kimberly Laing won the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.03, just one-tenth of a second off a NCAA regional mark.
Senior Megan Carnes picked a NCAA regional mark in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:42.92.
The Tide also set seven other personal records: Rachel Wilson in the Javelin (120-00) and the hammer throw (158-04), Ashley Ard in the 3000m (10:31.68), Ana Day in the 1500m (5:09.94), Whitney Taylor in the 800m (2:19.87) and the 1500m (4:48.21) and Rachel White in the 300m steeplechase (12:34.30)
