Track Picks Up Three NCAA Regional Marks in Arizona

SUN ANGEL, Ariz. ?? The University of Alabama men’s track and field team picked up three additional regional marks this weekend at the Sun Angel Classic on the campus of the University of Arizona.

“We are moving in the right direction,” head coach Harvey Glance said. “We are very close in a lot of areas to picking up additional NCAA regional marks.”

The Crimson Tide 4 x 100 team picked up a NCAA regional mark with a season best time of 40.07. The team consists of sprinters Brandon Spradley, Joel Pile, David Chaplin and Michael Cooley. The team beat their previous time of 40.54 which they set two weeks ago at Stanford University.

The same group of runners also competed in the 4 x 400 race and missed a NCAA regional mark by forty four-hundredths of a second with a time of 3:10.44.

Tide discus throwers Jason Dixon and Stephen Boozer both picked up NCAA regional marks in the discus for the third consecutive week.

Dixon threw a distance of 178-05, which is a personal best mark for him and seventh best in school history. This is Dixon’s fourth NCAA regional mark in the discus this season and he has improved his distance each of the last four consecutive weeks.

“Dixon is really showing some consistency,” Glance said. “Anytime you reach the NCAA regional mark four consecutive weeks, and improve each week you have a chance to do very well.”

Boozer picked up his third consecutive NCAA regional mark of the season with his distance of 170.10 in Arizona this weekend.

Sophomore Augustus Maiyo finished second in the 3000 meter race with a time of 8:16.41.

The Tide is scheduled to compete next weekend at the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.
