PALO, ALTO, Ca., EL PASO, Texas & STARKVILLE, Miss. ?? The University of Alabama men’s track and field team was spread throughout the country this weekend. The sprinters were at the Springtime Invitational on the campus of the Univ. of Texas- El Paso, the field events were is Starkville at the Mississippi State Invitational and the distance runners were at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Ca.
“This was a good weekend for us,” head coach Harvey Glance said. “Anytime we can pick up four NCAA regional marks makes me happy. I think we are getting better every week.”
In El Paso, Michael Cooley won the 200m with a time of 20.90 but more importantly picked a NCAA regional qualifying mark.
The Crimson Tide’s 4 x 100 team finished in second place and also picked up a NCAA Regional mark with a time of 40:54, that team consisted of Jon Knight, David Chaplin, Brandon Spradley and Michael Cooley.
David Chaplin finished second in the 100m with a time of 10.58, just nine-hundredths of a second from a NCAA regional mark.
In Starkville, the Tide finished 1-2 in the pole vault with Jake Winder winning the event at a height of 16-00 and Brandon Schneider took second place vaulting 15-05.75.
In the discus the Tide picked up two more NCAA regional qualifying marks, Stephen Boozer finshed second throwing 176-10 and Jason Dixon threw 170-06.
Dixon also finished second in the Hammer throw with a distance of 170-11.
David Clyburn finished second in the high jump with a height of 6-06.75.
In Palo Alto, Ca. at the prestigious Stanford Invitational freshman Emmanuel Bor and sophomore Augustus Maiyo both picked up NCAA regional qualifying marks in the 5000m. Bor turned in a time of 13:54.39 and Maiyo finished at 13:57.35.
Two weeks into the 2007 outdoor season the Tide has accumulated eight NCAA regional qualifying marks. The Tide will look to continue pick up more NCAA regional marks next weekend at the Texas relays on the campus of the University of Texas in Austin.
