ALABAMA BASEBALL TEAM TAKES ON MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE
The University of Alabama baseball team looks to end a three-game midweek losing streak when the Crimson Tide plays host to the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils Wednesday, March 21 at 6:30 p.m. (CDT). The two teams were originally scheduled to play at two-game, midweek series, but a scheduling conflict altered the schedule. The two teams will meet again later this season and the makeup date is expected to be announced this week. Alabama (15-8, 2-1 SEC) has lost its last three midweek games to No. 26 Southern Miss, Tennessee Tech and Samford. The Southern Miss and Samford games are the only two road games the Crimson Tide has played this year. The Crimson Tide won its season opening SEC series this past weekend, taking two of three from Tennessee. Alabama posted a .339 batting average in the series and hit five home runs in the three games. Freshman Jake Smith (Shannon) was 5-for-10 (.500) with two home runs and five RBI in his first SEC series. He stroked a two-run home run in his first career at-bat in Friday's series opener. He also slugged a two-run home run in Saturday's 9-1 win. Senior right-hander Bernard Robert (Denham Springs, La.) and sophomore right-hander Tommy Hunter (Indianapolis, Ind.) turned in stellar pitching performances. Robert notched his 10th career complete game as he four-hit Tennessee on Saturday. He added seven strikeouts. Robert took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and shutout into the ninth. Hunter made two appearances out of the bullpen against the Vols and notched his first save of the season to seal the series opener. Hunter had an extensive relief appearance in Sunday's finale as he allowed one run and four hits in seven innings, with two walks and eight strikeouts. He left after the eighth inning with a 7-6 lead. In three relief appearances last week, Hunter worked 10 1/3 innings and allowed one run and six hits, with two walks and 14 strikeouts. Mississippi Valley State (8-16) is coming off a series sweep against Alcorn State. The Delta Devils have won five of the last seven games. MVSU has played Georgia State (0-3) and Mississippi State (0-1), two teams on the Crimson Tide's 2007 baseball schedule.

Alabama head baseball coach Jim Wells (Northwestern State, 1980) is the winningest coach in school history. He has compiled a 538-254 (.680) record in 13 seasons at the Capstone.
