
Salem, Howell Read to Local Elementary School

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- University of Alabama senior center fielder Emeel Salem (Mountain Brook) and freshman pitcher Del Howell (Tuscaloosa) capped off "Read Across America Week" by reading a pair of Dr. Suess books to two kindergarten classes at Taylorville Primary School Friday afternoon.
Salem read "Green Eggs and Ham", while Howell read "The Cat and The Hat" to the 40 students in Mrs. Siemers and Mrs. Aldridge's class.
"I enjoy spending time with young people," Salem said. "I was happy to go to Taylorville today and read a Dr. Suess classic during "Read Across America Week". The value of an education is so important. There is more to life than athletics. I take my academics seriously and I hope these kids will too."
Salem, a 2006 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American and the SEC Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, has volunteered numerous hours throughout his career at local schools and spending time with youngsters.
He has been an intregal part of the Crimson Tide baseball team's community service success in the University of Alabama Athletic Department the last two academic years, as the Crimson Tide baseball team has logged more community service hours than any other men's varsity team.
Howell is a freshman on the UA baseball team this season after a successful career at American Christian Academy, where he led the Patriots to three Class 1A state baseball championships.
