TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ?? The University of Alabama women’s basketball team seeks an end to a pair of losing streaks on Sunday, Feb. 11, when the Tide travels to Oxford, Miss., to face Southeastern Conference rival Ole Miss at 2 p.m. Alabama hopes to end its 10-game losing streak in SEC action in 2006-07 and looks to halt a 13-game skid in the league that dates back to last year.
After having faced ranked opponents four times in its last five games, the Tide faces a Rebel unit that won its first six in the SEC and spent a few weeks ranked in the top 25 earlier this season. However, Ole Miss has lost three of its last five, including a 69-61 defeat at home to Kentucky on Thursday night.
In the Tide’s last outing, Alabama got off to a cold shooting start in the first half that thwarted some energetic play on the defensive end against No. 14 Georgia. The Lady Bulldogs built a sizeable half-time lead that UA could never surmount despite a more efficient offensive performance in the final 20 minutes.
The game marks a bit of a homecoming for Tide head coach Stephany Smith. A native of Brookhaven, Miss., Smith’s father, Ralph “Catfish” Smith, was an All-SEC end on the Rebel football team in the early 1960’s and is a current member of the Ole Miss Athletic Hall of Fame.
Alabama’s game with Ole Miss is not being televised, but can be heard on the Crimson Tide Radio Network, with David Crane calling the action.
After an off night on Thursday, Feb. 14, the Tide returns to Coleman Coliseum for its final two home games of the 2006-07 campaign. The home stand begins with a matchup with Florida on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m.
