TUSCALOOSA, Ala.-The Alabama men's tennis team, ranked 32nd in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association (ITCA) rankings, hosts a pair of matches this Saturday, Feb. 10, against No. 73 Furman and Winthrop. Alabama will start the match with Furman at 9 a.m. and follow-up with Winthrop at 5 p.m. Matches will be held either at the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility or the UA Varsity Courts depending on the weather.
"This weekend will present another good early season challenge for our team and we are looking forward to hosting two quality opponents in Furman and Winthrop," stated Crimson Tide head coach Billy Pate. "Both teams are well-coached and we need to bounce back and play our best after competing well against Virginia. There are some areas we need to improve and some positions that are up for grabs that we need to resolve."
Alabama (2-1) is coming off a loss to then No. 5 Virginia, with the Tide's Dan Buikema and Mathieu Thibaudeau upsetting No. 7 Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey in a tiebreaker clinching the doubles point.
Furman comes into the match 1-3, the latest loss coming from then No. 15 Florida. This marks the 12th meeting between Alabama and Furman, with their first contest dating back to 1964. Alabama leads the series 10-1, beating Furman 6-1 in last year's home opener.
Winthrop is 0-1 to start the season and headed to Troy Friday, Feb. 9 before traveling to Tuscaloosa to face the Tide. This weekend will be the first contest between Alabama and Winthrop.
