TUSCALOOSA ?? University of Alabama head volleyball coach Judy Green has announced that Ben Boldt, a member of the 2006 NCAA Champion Nebraska Cornhusker volleyball staff, has joined the Tide as her assistant coach for the 2007 season. Boldt, who was with the Huskers for the past six seasons, replaces former assistant coach Chris Redding, who left the Tide in January to become the head coach at North Carolina-Charlotte.
"I am delighted to have Ben join our coaching staff here at Alabama,” Green said. “He came highly recommended by the coaching staff at Nebraska and I feel that the championship experiences he has been a part of while at Nebraska can help our program take another step forward. Ben is loaded with enthusiasm and love for the game of volleyball that I believe our players and our fans will embrace."
Working under Husker head coach Jon Cook, Boldt has been a part of one of the most successful programs in the NCAA in recent years. Boldt capped off his career in Lincoln by helping NU earn its third NCAA Championship, as the Cornhuskers finished a 33-1 season with a championship game victory over Stanford in Omaha last December.
Nebraska earned NCAA Tournament bids in each of Boldt’s six seasons with the team, advancing to the Regionals in each of those seasons. The Huskers played in two national championship games during his tenure, losing to Washington in 2005 in addition to the 2006 victory over the Cardinal. Boldt was also a part of five Big 12 title teams during his six seasons on the NU staff.
“I’m really happy to be a part of the Alabama family,” Boldt said. “Coach Green has been nothing but genuine with me throughout the interview process and I hope to help the program keep going in the upward direction it has been going under her leadership.”
In addition to his duties on the floor with the Huskers, Boldt served as a head coach on the Nebraska Junior volleyball circuit and was also on the staff of the 2005 and 2006 USA Volleyball Youth Volleyball teams in addition to coaching the 2004 A2 Training team.
Boldt, a native of Lincoln and a graduate of Norris High School has been at Nebraska since 2000. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science in 2005 will receive a Master’s degree in Nutrition and Health Sciences in May of 2007.
