TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- Alice Tunaru has been playing tennis since she was seven years old and still loves the game now as much as she did then. In Romania, sports are not offered in regular schools, so in order to continue training, Alice's parents sent her to a school specifically for athletes. Sportive Pitesti caters to individuals who demonstrate superior athletic ability and have the capacity to compete at a high level. Even though the school offered tennis as a sport, Alice competed mostly in junior tournaments held in Bucharist, Romania. Alice knew she wanted to play tennis in college but it was not an option in Romania, so she looked on the internet for a university with a good tennis program and high academic integrity. The University of Alabama fit both of Alice's criteria, so she sent Jenny Mainz a CD and worked to find her way to the Capstone and the Crimson Tide roster.
Did you know:
- Alice lives with teammate Paulina Bigos
- Received a 4.0 grade point average in her first semester
- She likes Alabama for its "Southern Hospitality." She says it is uncommon for people to say hi to complete strangers on the street in Romania. She found the friendliness comforting when she arrived.
- Her favorite food is waffles. She had one for the first time eating breakfast with the team and she can't get enough. Her one piece of advice is not to order one from the Waffle House!
- Her favorite movie is Patch Adams
- Her favorite book is Crime and Punishment
- Her favorite class is History, taken last semester
- Her favorite athlete is Kim Clijsters
