TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- The University of Alabama head volleyball coach Judy Green announced the signing of two accomplished prep stars to the 2008 squad. The Crimson Tide inked outside hitter Ashley Frazier and middle blocker Leigh Moyer.
Frazier, an outside hitter from Toledo, Ohio, led Toledo Central Catholic High School to the 2007 Ohio Division II State Championship. The four year letterwinner garnered First Team All-State honors, District Player of the Year, First Team All-District and First Team All-City after her team took the State Championship. The District Seven Player of the Year was named co-captain her junior and senior years.
“Ashley is an outstanding outside hitter who has the ability to play both the opposite or the outside positions,” said Green. “We wanted to add depth and size to our outside hitter positions and we got both with Ashley. She is a very gifted athlete, student and person.”
At Toledo Central Catholic, the 6-1 senior also participates in basketball where she led her team to the Elite Eight in 2007, and is a member of the National Honor Society.
“She truly loves the game of volleyball and wants to compete for an SEC Championship,” said Green. “She is also one of four Alabama Volleyball signees to win their HS State Championship during their senior season. We are very excited to have Ashley join our program.”
Frazier plays club ball for Toledo Volleyball Club and led her team to three National tournament appearances from 2005-07. Prior to her time at Toledo Volleyball Club, Frazier spend two years with Glass City Volleyball Club. Frazier is coached by Sonny Lewis and Brad Turski at Toledo Volleyball Club.
Frazier plans to major in Exercise Science at the University of Alabama.
Moyer, a 6-2 senior from Atlanta, Ga., comes to the Capstone after a four-year stint at McIntosh High School. The two-time All-State performer led her team to the 2007 4A Georgia State Championship. Moyer garnered All-Area and All-County honors in 2006 and 2007 and was named the team’s captain her senior year.
“Leigh is a versatile athlete that can also play either opposite, outside or middle blocker,” said Green. “She has the size, speed and athleticism we needed at either position.
Moyer plays club volleyball for A5 out of Atlanta and in 2007 her club team finished fifth in the USJOV National Tournament. Moyer is coached by Kelly Audia.
“She is a committed to becoming an elite level athlete and that has shown by her commitment to drive a great distance just to play for a very good A5 Volleyball Club team,” Green said. “We believe she has a very high ceiling and will become a very competitive and physical player in the SEC.
Moyer served three years on the Academic Honor Roll at McIntosh and is a student representative for her senior class.
“She is an accomplished student, leader, and person and the type of person we want to represent Alabama volleyball,” stated Green. “She also won a state championship in her senior season.”
