TUSCALOOSA ?? University of Alabama junior forward Richard Hendrix is the league’s first Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for the 2007-08 basketball season. The league office named Hendrix its Player of the Week and Vanderbilt’s A.J. Ogilvy the Freshman of the Week on Monday.
In Alabama’s season opener against Troy on Friday, Hendrix led the 84-72 Alabama win with 22 points and 23 rebounds. His 23 rebounds were the most single game rebounds for any Crimson Tide player in nearly 32 years, since Reggie King pulled down 23 boards in a 1976 game against Oklahoma State. It was Hendrix’s career best rebounding performance in a game Alabama had 61 team rebounds. Though he was named SEC Freshman of the Week three times in 2006, this is the first SEC Player of the Week honor for Hendrix, a native of Athens who is a 2008 John Wooden Award candidate and preseason All-SEC pick.
Alabama’s last SEC Player of the Week was Jermareo Davidson who won it on February 2007, one of two Player of the Week honors he won last season.
