OXFORD, Miss. ?? The University of Alabama Soccer team fell 3-0 to Ole Miss Sunday afternoon. It was the first time all season the Tide (8-4-1, 1-2-1 SEC) has lost back-to-back games.
"You have to credit Ole Miss for jumping on our mistakes today," head coach Don Staley said. "We have to find a way to regroup and get ready for next weekend. This was a very disappointing weekend for us."
Ole Miss (5-3-3, 3-0-1 SEC) was able to score the first goal of the game in the 21st minute. Senior Amy Gill headed the ball past Alabama keeper Justine Bernier, who came to the edge of the box to pick up the ball. Gill was able to get behind Bernier and head the ball into the open net.
With eight minutes left in the first half Alabama defender Colleen Posey committed a foul in the box giving Ole Miss's Stacy Emmonds a penalty kick which she was able to convert to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead.
In the 75th minute junior Amy Bales was able to beat Victoria Frederick, who was playing sweeper for the first time this season, and new keeper Karen Lansden for her second goal of the season. It was the first goal Lansden has surrendered this season.
Ole Miss was able to control most of the game, allowing the Tide to take only five shots, four on goal.
Alabama came into the game leading the SEC in shots on goal per game, averaging 10.67
The Tide mixed up the formations throughout the second half playing everyone available on their bench, including reserve goal keeper Karen Lansden in the nets.
With today's loss the Tide dropped to 1-7 all time in Oxford.
The Tide will return home next weekend as they host the Arkansas Lady Backs on Friday and LSU on Sunday.
