DALLAS, Texas ?? The Alabama women’s swimming and diving team is currently in sixth place after day one of the 14th annual SMU Classic held at Perkins Natatorium on SMU's campus.
The meet is unique in the college season. Each team brings nine athletes, eight swimmers and a diver, to the meet. There are 18 events over the two days of the meet and each event has two heats of six swimmers. Each team can put up one athlete per heat.
Freshman Ida Persson was second in the “A” heat of the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.63 while sophomore Elle St. Charles was second in the “B” heat with a 56.31. Persson’s time was more than a second faster than her season opening time at the Georgia Tech Quad meet and also makes her the ninth fastest 100 butterflyer in school history. St. Charles was nearly three seconds faster than her season opening mark.
Sophomore Agustina de Giovanni took third in the “A” heat of the 400 IM with a 4:20.17, which gives her an NCAA B Qualifying standard. It also moves her up to third all-time for the Crimson Tide. Freshman Kate Gray was third in the “B” heat of the 400 IM, with a 4:25.33. De Giovanni came back to take second in the “B” heat of the 100 breaststroke, posting an NCAA B standard time of 1:03.64.
The meet concludes Saturday with nine more events including three-meter diving and the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
