TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ?? The University of Alabama softball team is set to conclude its fall schedule this weekend when the Crimson Tide hosts the University of Memphis in the Fall Brawl II. The Tide swept a pair of games last weekend in the Fall Brawl I over Wallace-Dothan and Alabama-Huntsville.
"All of us are looking forward to playing a Division I opponent in our final fall games,” said UA head coach Patrick Murphy. “The level of competition will be a step up from last weekend. We are hit right now with an injury bug, so we will be very limited with our roster on Saturday. Chrissy Owens will start for us in the first game and we are hoping that Kelsi Dunne will be able to start the second game, even though she has been sick all week."
The Tide was carried last weekend by the production of the top part of its lineup. Alabama’s first three hitters went 7-of-9 from the plate, scored seven runs and knocked in four in the team’s 14-1 win over Wallace-Dothan. Kelli Montalvo hit a home run against Alabama-Huntsville and the Tide hit three against Wallace-Dothan.
Charlotte Morgan got the win on the mound against Wallace-Dothan while true freshman Kelsi Dunne earned the win over UA-Huntsville. Chrissy Owens pitched an inning of relief in both Tide victories and recorded three strikeouts in her two innings of work.
Memphis posted a winning record in 2007, going 36-25 on the season. The Tigers were 10-12 in Conference-USA competition and finished sixth in the league. Memphis returns its top three hitters from last year, a season that saw them have success at home. The Tigers went 19-7 on their home field in 2007.
The doubleheader with Memphis is scheduled to begin at noon and will be the final games of the Tide’s fall schedule. Admission to fall softball games is $5 per person.
