COMUMBIA, SC ?? The University of Alabama soccer team fell 2-0 at the University of South Carolina Friday evening. The Tide dropped to 9-6-1 on the season and 2-4-1 in the Southeastern Conference
"I thought that we played a very good game with the exception of two plays at the end of each half," head coach Don Staley said. "I thought (assistant coach) Nikki (Smith) did an exceptional job with the substitutions tonight and preparing the team all week, this score was not indicative of the hard work we put in this week."
The first half was held scoreless for the first 40 minutes in what was mostly a defensive battle. South Carolina (11-4-1, 3-3-1 SEC) was able to score the games first goal with just over four minutes left in the half.
Sophomore Erin Sullivan took a cross pass from Monica Hogan and was able to knock it in from about six yards out inside the near post for a 1-0 lead.
The second half was again a defensive battle with the Crimson Tide fighting for shot opportunities throughout the half. Alabama had their look at the goals but was unable to find the back of the net.
"There was a couple of points in the game when we had some opportunities to change the game but the south Carolina keeper came up with some saves and keep them ahead." Staley added.
South Carolina was able to put the game away with another goal late in a half again with about four minutes left on the clock Gamecocks were able to score.
"It was a shame we gave up those two late goals in both halves, they were at critical points in the game," Staley said. "I thought we played very well tonight and I had a real chance to evaluate this team tonight and like a lot of what I saw."
Danila Monteiro scored her sixth goal of the season this time inside the near post.
The Tide will continue their weekend road trip to Gainesville Sunday to play the Florida Gators at 12:30 CST.
"There is still a lot of soccer left in this league, we have to get ready to go to Gainesville and play again on Sunday," Staley said.
