Tide Falls to No. 54 Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas- The No. 44 Alabama women's tennis team fell to No. 54 Texas Tech, 5-2 in their second road match of the weekend Sunday, Jan. 28 at the Lubbock Country Club indoor facility.
The Tide had a few chances to take the match but Texas Tech never let up and clinched the win after the third singles match.
"Texas Tech did a good job of handling the big points and not being tentative in their play today", stated head coach Jenny Mainz. "This weekend didn't fall in our direction so we are going back to the drawing board and getting after it this week. We gained invaluable experience handling different situations that will prepare us for the rest of the season."
Andrea Brenes and Alice Tunaru earned two singles wins for the Tide today defeating their opponents in straight sets. Brenes cruised by Kerryn Potgieter in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 and Tunaru out-lasted Anne Sophie Fankam in the second set to win 6-4, 7-6.
Mari Muller lost to Samantha Van der Drift 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 and Shelley Godwin lost in three sets to Lakann Wagley 6-2, 6-7, 4-6 at No2.
Freshman Nicole Briceno competed hard but eventually lost in three sets to Janet Durham 2-6, 7-5, 2-6, and Bianca Svensson lost to Maria Jose Andres in a super tie-breaker 5-7, 6-4, (7-10).
In doubles, the freshman duo of Paulina Bigos and Briceno defeated Van der Drift and Potgieter, 8-5, claiming their first doubles victory of the dual match season.
Muller and Brenes lost to Wagley and Fankam, 8-5, and Godwin and Svensson lost to Durham and Andres, 8-6.
The Tide women's tennis team will return home next weekend to take on Colorado at 10 a.m. in their first home match of the 2007 season Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility.
