TUSCALOOSA, ALA ?? As good as the Alabama swimming and diving team has been in the pool so far this season it has been just as good, if not better, in the classroom.
The Crimson Tide, which has turned in some of the Southeastern Conference’s top performances this season, including Vlad Polyakov’s breaststroke swims that lead the nation, saw more than 70-percent of the combined men and women’s roster earned a 3.0 or better grade point average during the fall semester. Coach Eric McIlquham also had 19 student-athletes make the Dean’s List after earning a 3.5 or better GPA.
“We have been on quite a roll this year,” McIlquham said. “We are having a great season in the pool and the classroom and that is what we’re about here at Alabama. That kind of balance is how we measure success.”
Among the 39 swimmers and divers that earned over a 3.0 GPA, five, junior Kim Singer, sophomore Kevin Greer along with freshmen Tim Cline, Shannon Van Hoy and Sam Morgan posted a perfect 4.0, earning a spot on the prestigious President’s List. The women’s team posted a 3.44 team grade point average and the men posted a 3.13.
Alabama opens up the postseason at the Southeastern Conference Championships Feb. 2 in Lexington, Ky.
