The Alabama Swimming and Diving teams return to action this weekend at Kentucky after a month and a half off from competition.
When the Crimson Tide men and women face the Kentucky Wildcats Saturday, in Lexington, Ky. at 1 p.m. CT it will mark the swimmers first competition since the U.S. Open. The divers will be a little sharper after last weekends Georgia Invitational. It will be the teams’ first dual meet competition since facing Auburn in mid-November.
And while the Tide swimmers haven’t competed over that span, they have been far from idle, putting in some of its training of the season over the Christmas break.
“We’ve been busy, working hard and getting the last bit of our foundation in place,” Tide head coach Eric McIlquham said. “Now though, it’s time for us to get back to racing.”
Alabama has just two weekends of competition left before the beginning of the championships season, facing the Wildcats this weekend before closing out the regular season with a Southeastern Conference tri-meet at home against Florida and South Carolina.
“The SEC Championships were moved up this season because of the World Championships, so we have a very short period of time between the end of our Christmas training cycle and the beginning of the championship season,” McIlquham said. “It’s time to get going and get going in a hurry.”
The Wildcats will provide the Tide with a good test going into the championship season.
“There are no easy meets in the Southeastern Conference,” McIlquham said. “And Kentucky is no exception. Both their men and women are very good and we’ll have to compete hard to have a chance to win.”
