
Crimson Tide Competes at SDSU Fall Tennis Classic

San Diego, Calif. ?? The University of Alabama women's tennis team began competition at the San Diego State University Fall Tennis Classic on Friday.
Andrea Brenes and Nicole Briceno each went undefeated in the first day of competition. Brenes, a junior from San Jose, Costa Rica, won her first match in three sets 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-3 against Milana Yusupov of San Diego State. Brenes went on to defeat Denver's Lorinda Boothman in straight sets 6-2, 7-5 to advance to the Flight 2 semifinals. She will face Denver's Julia Bauregger on Saturday. Bauregger moved on with a 6-1, 7-6 (3) victory over the Crimson Tide's Alice Tunaru. Tunaru, a freshman from Piesti, Romania won 6-3, 6-3 against Zoe Taylor of San Diego in the first round.
Briceno, a freshman from Penbroke Pines, Fla., won in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 against Denver's Marisa Mechem in the first round and then defeated Florida State's Miranda Foley 6-0, 6-2, to move on to the Flight 2 semifinals. Briceno will take on Arizona's Tina Razloznik in the next round. Razloznik advanced with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 win over Alabama's Paulina Bigos. Bigos, a freshman from Chicago, Ill., had defeated Pepperdine's Vanessa Dunlap in the first round 6-3, 6-2.
Bianca Svensson, a freshman from Atlanta, Ga., also won her first match in the Flight 3 bracket. She defeated Sydni Katz of Arizona 6-1, 6-0 but lost a close match to Tapiwa Marobela of Florida State 7-5, 7-5 in the second round.
In the Flight 1 singles bracket, the Crimson Tide had two players lose in the first round but bounce back for wins on the consolation side. Shelley Godwin, a sophomore from Enterprise, lost to Holly Bagshaw of the host school San Diego State 7-5, 6-2. Godwin got revenge against another Aztec Sisse Nielsen in her next match with a 6-0, 7-5 victory.
Mari Muller, a senior from Rio Negro, Argentina, lost to Florida State's Lauren Macfarlane 6-0, 6-4 in the first round. She came back to win 6-3, 6-4 against Denver's Kyla Iwinski.
In doubles, Muller and Brenes defeated Bagshaw and Kitts of San Diego State, 8-5, in the opening match of the Flight 1 doubles. In the Flight 2 bracket, Bigos and Tunaru lost 8-4 to Cadua and Yusupov of San Diego State. Svensson and Briceno fell to the combination of Florida State's Marobela and Hagiwara of San Diego State, 8-4.
Play will continue on Saturday at the Aztec Tennis Center and will conclude on Sunday with the Flight 1 and 2 Championship matches in singles and doubles.
