Tunaru, Briceno and Svensson Win in Collegiate Debuts

TUSCALOOSA ?? Alabama freshmen Alice Tunaru, Nicole Briceno and Bianca Svensson all won Friday in their Crimson Tide debuts in the Roberta Alison Fall Classic at the UA Tennis Complex.
Tunaru and Briceno, each seeded in their respective flights, pulled three-set victories Friday to advance in the annual tournament that honors Alabama's first female varsity athlete. Svensson cruised in her first round match against Bethany Benson, 6-2, 6-1
Tunaru defeated UNC-Greensboro's Whitney Miles in the opening round 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 and played Auburn's Jil Hastenrath in the second round. Hastenrath then defeated Tunaru in straight sets 7-5, 6-1.
For Briceno, her first collegiate victory also came in her debut. Briceno dominated Samford's Sarah McKey in the third set for the victory before falling to top-seeded Liberty Sveke of Vanderbilt in the semifinals.
Sophomore Shelley Godwin also collected a win Friday. Godwin defeated Auburn-Montomery's Dominika Zuzulova in straight sets to advance to the semifinals.
Play at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic will continue all day Saturday at the UA Tennis Complex. Action will begin with doubles at 8 a.m. and admission is free to the public. For complete tournament results, visit www.rolltide.com.
