Baswell was a highly touted high school catcher, but a high school knee injury, which forced him to miss the entire fall, could keep him from seeing action this season.

- A 2006 graduate of South Lamar High School in Millport, Alabama, where he was a two-year starter for coach Garth Moss
- 2006 Columbus (Miss.) Commercial Dispatch Player of the Year
- 2006 Tuscaloosa News Super 10 High School team
- During his two-year career, Baswell batted .532 with 22 home runs and 83 RBI
- As a senior, Baswell batted an eye-popping .533 with 14 home runs and 49 RBI
- He also rapped out 12 doubles and drew 37 walks, including 23 intentional walks, all three numbers led the team
- For his efforts, he was named First-Team All-State by The Birmingham News and Alabama Sports Writer’s Association
- On the mound, he was 8-2 with a 4.20 ERA and 63 strikeouts
- Led the Stallions to an 18-15 overall record, which included 14 wins in its last 19 games to reach the Class A Alabama State High School Playoffs
- South Lamar lost in the Class A semi finals to eventual state champion American Christian Academy, a team that featured current UA teammate Del Howell
- Hit two home runs and collected seven RBI in first-round playoff win over Ariton as a senior
- As a junior, he batted .531 with eight home runs and 34 RBI for the Stallions
- He missed the majority of his sophomore season to repair a broken growth plate in his right arm
