A talented freshman, Smith can play first base or third base, but will likely open the season as the Crimson Tide’s starting third baseman. An excellent hitter and defender, he broke numerous high school records held by former Tide All-American Jeremy Brown at Hueytown High School.

- A three-year starter at Hueytown High School, where he played for coach Rick Patterson
- In his final two years, Smith hit .461 with 37 home runs and 104 RBI
- He set single-season and career school records for home runs and RBI
- He also set single-season and career school records for wins and strikeouts on the mound
- He broke Hueytown single-season records held by former Alabama All-American and 2002 First-Round Draft pick, Jeremy Brown
