TUSCALOOSA ?? Amy Pauly, a sophomore libero and defensive specialist on the University of Alabama volleyball team, has been named Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the league office today.
“Amy is learning every day how to handle the responsibilities of being the starting libero in our program,” head coach Judy Green said. “For her, the main thing that we want is consistency in her game. She has shown good signs of that in stretches of our preseason and I think it’s a great honor for our program for her to get this award.”
Pauly helped the Tide open its first weekend of conference play with two wins, as Alabama beat Mississippi State in four games on Friday and outlasted Ole Miss in a five-game match on Sunday afternoon in Tuscaloosa.
The Burr Ridge, Ill., native set a school record at the UNI Invitational on Sept. 9 when she racked up 35 digs in a win over Kansas State. She tallied 18 digs in the win over Mississippi State and recorded a team-high 21 digs in the victory over the Rebels.
Pauly leads the Tide in digs for the season, averaging 4.16 per game through 11 matches. After the two Alabama wins to open SEC play, her dig per game average stands at 4.11.
The Crimson Tide travels to instate rival Auburn on Friday in the first road game of the conference season. Alabama faces Florida in Gainesville on Sunday.
