NASHVILLE, Tenn. ?? The University of Alabama women’s golf team finished its second tournament of the season with a 14th-place effort at the Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship in Nashville, Tenn. The Tide fired a team score of 911 over three rounds of play on the Ironhorse Course at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.
Duke, the two-time defending national champions, won the event and No. 6 Georgia finished second. UCLA, the second ranked team in the country, Arizona and Purdue rounded out the top five in the team standings. The 15-team field included six top-10 teams and 11 of the top-20 squads in the country.
“It would have been a good tournament for us to finish in the top 10 or 12, unfortunately we weren’t able to do that,” head coach Mic Potter said. “We were very sloppy this weekend, but I still see a lot of good things from our team. We are not that far away from being one of the top 20 teams in the country, but we can’t be as careless as we were this weekend.”
Senior Jenny Suh led the Tide for the second time in as many outings, as she shot a 217 over 54 holes. Suh, who tied for 11th place, just missed her second consecutive top-10 finish of the season. The 2006 first team All-American performer fired an even-par 72 on the final day after a three-under 69 in round two.
Helena Blomberg, a true freshman from Uppsala, Sweden, shot a 76 in the concluding round and finished with a 230 for the tournament. She carded two rounds of 76 and one 78 in the second outing of her young career.
Sophomore Laura Goodwin shot a 234 for the weekend, while junior Sarah Sturm finished with a 237. True freshman Rhea Nair, of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, fired a 239.
After playing two events in a single week, the Tide will now be off for nearly a month. Alabama’s next event will be on October 13, when UA travels to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship.
