Bama Within Striking Distance of Title

DALTON, GA. -  The University of Alabama shot three under par in Saturday’s second round but slipped from leader to second place amid a field of 18 teams, half of them ranked in the Top 25, at the Carpet Capital Classic.

Alabama is 15 under par going into Sunday’s final round at The Farm here in Dalton, Ga. The Crimson Tide goes into the third round trailing fourth-ranked Clemson by three strokes. Clemson shot eight under par, 280, on Saturday to overtake Alabama. Clemson is 18 under par going into the final round. Alabama shot 276, minus 12, on Friday in the opening round and followed it in the second round with 285, minus three.

Two Tide golfers are tied with one another for eighth place. Thomas Hagler is at four under for the weekend, shooting 69-71/140. Gator Todd shot 68-72/140 on the par 72 course.  Joining their teammates in the top 20 in the individual standings going into the third round are Mark Harrell and Michael Thompson who are among a tie at 16^th. Harrell shot 71-71/142. Thompson shot 68-74/142. They’re two under par. Alabama’s Matthew Swan is T-31^st. He’s at even par, shooting 73-71/144.

North Carolina’s Darren Blair leads the field going into the final round. He’s at 10 under par, compliments of his opening round 65. He followed that with 69 and has a two stroke lead ahead of Clemson’s Vince Hatfield (66-70/136).

In the team standings, Clemson leads (558), followed by Alabama (276-285/561), Florida (569), Tennessee (571), Georgia State and North Carolina State (572), Georgia (573), Georgia Tech (576), Augusta State and Wake Forest (578), East Tennessee State (579), Auburn (582), Duke and Vanderbilt (584), TCU (587), Texas Tech (591), South Carolina (599) and Texas (612).

The final round will be played beginning Sunday morning.
