Five University of Alabama men’s tennis players continued play Saturday at the UVa Fall Invitational and the Thomasville Collegiate Invitational.
Javier Bes led Alabama in Thomasville, Georgia. Bes posted a three-set victory over West Florida’s Nicolas Barrientos, the top-ranked player in Division II, and teamed up with Sammy Struyf to defeat Carco and Botelli of Tennessee Tech in doubles.
At the UVa Fall Invitational, sophomore Mathieu Thibaudeau recorded his first victory of the season. Thibaudeau came from behind to win the final two sets against Wake Forest’s Jason Morgenstern.
Sophomore Dan Buikema played a thrilling three-set match against William and Mary’s Kavi Sud. Each player held serve throughout the final set. Buikema even held match point during the third set. However Sud fought it off and eventually won the match in a tiebreaker.
Buikema and Thibaudeau will play in the doubles consolation draw finals Sunday morning. The duo upset the No. 56-ranked doubles team from Radford to advance on Friday.
