TUSCALOOSA ?? Second-year Alabama women’s basketball head coach Stephany Smith got the school started on a fun note on Saturday when she hosted a welcome back party for the team, coaches, support staff and families at her home in Tuscaloosa.
“It was our first annual welcome-back cookout,” Smith said. “It is something I have traditionally done to kick off a new year. It is just a great opportunity for our players’ parents to meet each other and get to know each other better so that we can create a more family-like environment in our program.”
The gathering, complete with yard games and a catered barbeque menu, was attended by approximately 60 individuals.
Crimson Tide players, who reported back for the beginning of fall classes on August 23, have been going through individual workouts and informal team pick-up games for the past few weeks. The team had a busy summer in the weight room, on the floor and in the class room. Attendance at workouts was nearly perfect and the team compiled a 3.56 cumulative GPA during the summer.
Practice officially begins for the 2006-07 campaign on October 13, with the first preseason game scheduled for October 31. Alabama’s first regular-season game will be on November 10 when the Tide plays host to Samford in the season-opener.
