TUSCALOOSA ?? Rachael Green, a senior middle blocker on the University of Alabama volleyball team, was named team co-captain by head coach Judy Green last week.
“Rachael has certainly done a lot of things that a captain does without being told to do them,” Green said. “She has taken a lot of ownership in the success of this team.”
Green, a native of Ooltewah, Tenn., helped the Tide to a tournament title at the Academy Sports Invitational in Tuscaloosa last weekend. She tallied 18 kills in three matches, including nine in the Tide’s win over Kansas in the finale on Saturday. Green is averaging 1.8 kills per game and is tied for third on the team with six blocks on the young season.
“I have seen Rachael nurture our three freshmen since last spring and have seen her spend time with players who have been injured and help them build confidence,” Green said. “She has been able to do all of that and continue to have a calm confidence in herself. She is a truly selfless person and it is an honor she deserves.”
The promotion of Green gives the Tide two team captains for the 2006 season. Green joins teammate Megan Hudson, who was voted as a permanent team captain last season.
Alabama hosts its second home tournament in as many weeks beginning Friday, September 1, when the Tide welcomes Ball State, UW-Milwaukee and Mercer to the CAVE at Coleman Coliseum for the 2006 Hampton Inn Bama Bash.
