TUSCALOOSA ?? In its first preseason appearance of the 2006 season, the Crimson team handed the White team a 4-1 loss in the team’s annual scrimmage this afternoon in the CAVE.
“It was really good to get out in a match-like environment and play in front of fans,” head coach Judy Green said. “It certainly helped our three first-year players get over their jitters and be in that situation for the first time. I think from a positive side as a team, we played very well out of system volleyball both offensively and defensively and I felt like that we did a very nice job of minimizing unforced errors when we were out of system.”
Bridget Fuentez, a second team All-SEC performer last season as a sophomore, led the Crimson unit with 13 kills on 33 attempts for the afternoon. Teammate Crystal Hudson chipped in with 10 kills on 20 attempts for the Crimson team.
I thought Bridget Fuentez had a good all-around scrimmage today,” Green said. “She played the game very well and was very composed. Rachael Green made the most of the opportunities she had and looked very confident. I thought Jennifer Weber had a nice scrimmage, she passed the ball well and served well. She made a difference today.”
For the white team, true freshman Calli Johnson from Dubuque, Iowa, led the squad with five kills. Senior Rachael Green tallied four kills for the white team and added four kills while competing on the Crimson team.
Brigitte Slack played the majority of the time at the setter spot for the Crimson team and racked up 32 assists. Megan Hudson set for the White unit and recorded 19 assists.
The leader in digs for the Crimson team was Amy Pauly, who tallied 10, while Johnson led the White team with nine.
“We have a lot to learn about each other and playing with each other,” Green said. “We are getting ready to enter our first tournament week and we have four days to get better in the gym and that will be what our focus will be on this week.”
Alabama opens the 2006 campaign on Friday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m., when the Tide takes on Miami (Fla.) in the opening match of the Academy Sports Invitational. Alabama will also take on Alabama A&M and Kansas in the CAVE next weekend.
