TUSCALOOSA ?? Four current University of Alabama golfers will be among the 312 men competing for the 2006 United States Amateur Championship when play begins Monday, August 21.
The 2006 event will be played August 21-27 at Hazeltine National Golf Club and the Chaska Town Course in Chaska, Minn.
This year's event accepted 7,182 entries, and, among those who broke through and earned spots through sectional qualifiers were the Crimson Tide's Matthew Swan, Mark Harrell, Thomas Hagler and Michael Thompson. Swan, who will be sophomore at Alabama when classes begin on Wednesday, is making his third straight appearance at the U.S. Amateur. He has qualified for the tournament every time he has tried, and last year he advanced to the third round of match play where he was eliminated by eventual champion Edoardo Molinari. The Montgomery native was forced to play his own Alabama teammate, Daphne's Joseph Sykora, when the pair drew one another in the second round of match play last year. Swan has a 12:45 p.m. CT tee-time Monday off the number 10 hole at Hazeltine. He's paired with Pablo Martin of Spain and Cole Isban of South Bend, Ind.
Harrell, who will be a junior at Alabama, is making his second straight U.S. Amateur appearance. He's in the third to last group to tee off Monday on hole number 10 of the Chaska Town Course. Harrell, who is from Hazlehurst, Ga., will play with Canada's Brad Revell and Jon Sauer of St. Cloud, Minn.
Hagler, a native of Ringgold, Ga., who is a senior at Alabama this fall, made the field and competed in 2003. On Monday he'll tee off at 7:40 a.m. CT on the Chaska Town Course tenth hole with Birmingham's Carlton Forrester and Scott Watson of Vacaville, Calif.
Making his first appearance is Thompson who is from Tucson, Ariz. He has transferred to Alabama after his golf team at Tulane was disbanded following the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He will open play Monday at 6:10 a.m. CT on hole number one at Chaska Town Course and will play with Kurtis Sroka of McHenry, Ill., and Jason Kang of Valencia, Calif.
Alabama head golf coach Jay Seawell will be among the galleries in Minnesota as follows all four of his Tide golfers. Last year Seawell was equally busy as four of his Tide golfers participated in the 2005 U.S. Amateur as well, including Swan, Harrell, Sykora and Clint Provost.
Fans with access to the internet can follow Alabama's golfers and the field with live scoring on the internet through the event's official website, www.usamateur.org. The Golf Channel will televise match play on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and NBC picks up coverage of the event with the semifinals on Saturday and the championship match on Sunday.
