The University of Alabama soccer team is gearing up for the 2006 season with preseason training camp this week in Orange Beach, Alabama. Throughout the week, www.rolltide.com will chronicle Alabama's preseason workouts through a series of diary entries from the Alabama players leading right up to the Tide's season-opening scrimmage at the UA Soccer Stadium on Saturday, August 19 against Samford at 7 p.m.
Preseason Diary: Day 2
After a long first day, and a much needed night of rest, Day 2 at Orange Beach saw us experience our first morning practice here. In the sweltering heat, we focused on passing and ball-handling skills. Coach Staley and assistant coach Katie Barnes had us hard at work on juggling, figure 8s, 2-on-2 drills and we finished with the pug mini goals.
After a thorough workout it was back to the condos for lunch. Coach provided us a much needed break and gave us the afternoon off. We had our first opportunity to spend a little time down in the Gulf of Mexico, and of course took a few of the obligatory beach team pictures. After a dip in the pool, most of us headed up to our rooms for what have become our normal midday naps. While most of us slept, those players with injuries were hard at work in the pool with trainer Sherry Kimbro doing high energy "Water Olympics" featuring Life Saver Races. Upon the conclusion of the Olympic closing ceremonies, Chelsea made her bid to represent Canada in the 2008 Summer Games by displaying her vast synchronized swimming skills, much to the enjoyment of her cheering teammates.
Rested and relaxed we headed back out to the Orange Beach Sportsplex for our nightly scrimmage. Sophomore Kailey Corken continued her new found offensive outburst, scoring her second goal in as many nights. After giving our all on the field, we were rewarded with a delicious Mexican dinner featuring steak and shrimp fajitas with rice, beans, lettuce and all the fixings. Our bodies tired and our bellies full, we headed back to the condos blessed with the knowledge that we would get to sleep in after Coach rewarded us with the next day's morning session off.
Until tomorrow,
The Alabama Soccer Team
