TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Summer officially came to an end for the University of Alabama baseball team Tuesday night when sophomore right-hander Tommy Hunter (Indianapolis, Ind.) and the USA National Baseball Team defeated Chinese Taipei 18-9 to capture the gold medal at the FISU World University Championships in Havana, Cuba.
The USA National Team finished the summer with a 28-2-1 overall record and successfully defended its 2004 FISU gold medal. The .919 winning percentage is the best ever by a USA Baseball collegiate team and the tournament win was the first ever for a USA Baseball National Team in Cuba.
Hunter appeared in 14 games this summer, including one start, and compiled a 3-0 record and 3.80 earned run average. He worked 21 1/3 innings and allowed 19 hits, 11 runs and nine earned runs, with five walks and 23 strikeouts.
