SOUTH YARMOUTH, Mass. - University of Alabama right-hander David Robertson (Tuscaloosa) won the 2006 SportsTicker Boston Playoff Most Valuable Player Award after pitching the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox to their second CCBL Championship in the last three years.
Robertson pitched three scoreless innings to preserve the Red Sox 5-1 win over the Wareham Gatemen in front of 8,272 fans at Red Wilson Field Sunday afternoon.
He came into the game in the seventh inning to replace starter Terry Doyle (Boston College) for the Red Sox. He pitched three perfect innings to get the save and close out the championship series for the Red Sox.
Robertson's perfect innings included seven strikeouts, with six in a row to end the game. His stellar performance was a big reason he won the SportsTicker Boston Playoff MVP Award, which he was presented with by league commissioner Paul Galop at the end of the game.
He was perfect throughout the 2006 CCBL playoffs as he retired all 22 batters he faced in his five relief appearances. The junior-to-be for the Crimson Tide pitched 7 1/3 innings and struck out 15 of the 22 batters he faced. He also recorded four saves in the five playoff games, including the three-inning save in the CCBL Championship game vs. Wareham.
Robertson appeared in 16 games during the regular season and went 0-2 with five saves and compiled a 2.79 ERA for the YD Red Sox. He worked 29 innings and allowed 21 hits, 11 runs and nine earned runs, with 20 walks and 46 strikeouts as the Red Sox won the CCBL Eastern Division title with a 28-16 record.
Robertson has been the Crimson Tide's premier closer each of the last two seasons and will fill that role again in 2007. He has appeared in 61 career games and compiled an 11-9 record and 2.96 ERA with 18 saves in his two-year career at Alabama. He enters the 2007 season just four saves shy of becoming the school's all-time leader. Brian Reed (2002-03) holds the current record with 21 career saves.
