The Alabama women’s basketball team took a well deserved break from its voluntary summer workouts with a cookout hosted by head coach Stephany Smith. The team, which has been joined by seven newcomers who arrived on campus in June, has been working hard throughout the off-season with its slate of voluntary individual and team workouts.
“It was a great opportunity for us to all get together,” Smith said. “The players have been working hard all summer in the gym and the coaches have been on the road recruiting, so it was really one of the first opportunities for us all to get together since everyone has been back on campus. We had a great time and it was wonderful to relax and kick back after so much hard work this summer.”
To reward that hard work, Smith hosted a team barbeque at her home, where Tide players, coaches and managers joined for a home-cooked meal. After eating, things got messy when the players took advantage of the slip-n-slide set up in Smith’s backyard. Even the coaches got involved, albeit involuntarily.
“Coach Smith told us to plan a get-together, so we came up with the slip-n-slide idea as a team,” senior guard Leah Drury said. “We had a great time bonding. You could really see all of the personalities on this team come out and we had a great time.”
The Crimson Tide will officially open the season on October 13 when practice begins.
