VILLAGE of PINEHURST, N.C. ?? Jenny Suh continued her success as an amateur golfer by winning the 104th North and South Women’s Amateur championship on Sunday, July 23, in Pinehurst, N.C. Suh, who will be a senior with the Crimson Tide this fall, beat BYU senior-to-be Rachel Newren, 5 & 4, in match play to earn the title.
Suh, who set the school’s single-season stroke average record (73.44) as a junior while helping Alabama to its second NCAA Championship appearance, defeated Newren in 32 holes to earn the title at the event. The Fairfax, Va., native opened the championship round with a four-hole advantage and was able to stave off a late charge by Newren to capture the victory.
The North and South is one of the nation’s most prestigious amateur events, with five of the top-10 amateurs in the nation in the field at the 2006 tournament. This year’s version was a grueling one, with two rounds of stroke play to qualify followed by six intense rounds of match-play action to determine a champion. Temperatures were high throughout the week to go with high humidity, making the competition even more intense.
Suh’s eventful summer will continue on Saturday, July 29, when she will represent the United States at the 2006 Curtis Cup.
The Curtis Cup has a 132-year tradition, matching teams from the United States with units from Great Britain and Ireland on a biennial basis. This 2006 Cup will be held at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon, Ore., on July 29 and 30.
