TUSCALOOSA ?? The Alabama women’s basketball team continued its hard work this summer by making some contributions off the court. Tide players have participated in a pair of community service projects helping residents from the Tuscaloosa area.
“When you are growing a program you immediately look at what we can do for the community who supports us,” head coach Stephany Smith said. “The other part of community service is that it is great for players to be put in different positions in speaking and leading different groups of people, which is a key to developing character.”
On July 18, senior guard Leah Drury and incoming freshman Nikki Davis assisted in the local chapter of Meals on Wheels, delivering prepared lunches to local citizens. The duo spent the better part of a day making deliveries to residents throughout the area.
Drury continued her community service efforts on Wednesday, traveling to the Skyland Baptist Church basketball camp to speak to youth in attendance. Drury, who played overseas this summer with the Athletes-in-Action group, has been involved in several projects throughout her career at Alabama.
The Tide players have planned several more community service projects throughout the remainder of the summer. Included in those plans is a trip to the Children’s Museum, where several players will be trained to volunteer at several of the exhibits there.
The women’s basketball team will officially begin the season on October 13 with the first day of practice.
