North Carolina finished the 2006 season with a 45-19 record and won the ACC Coastal Division with a 22-8 conference record. The Tar Heels won three games on June 2-4 to capture the Chapel Hill Regional title and advance to the Super Regionals. Carolina defeated Maine 15-7 on Friday and beat Winthrop on Saturday and Sunday by scores of 14-4 and 14-2 to capture its first Regional title since 2003 and enter the Super Regionals with a 48-19 record. The 48 wins rank as the second most in Carolina history and third nationally in 2006 behind the top two national seeds Clemson (50) and Rice (53). UNC is making its second trip to the Super Regionals. Its first trip resulted in a 0-2 performance at the 2003 Columbia Super Regional. Two Tar Heel pitchers were selected in the first round of this year’s Major League Baseball Draft. Starting pitchers Andrew Miller and Daniel Bard became the first pair of Tar Heels to be taken in the first round of the MLB Draft since 1985 when they were drafted Tuesday June 6. Miller, who finished the year 12-2 with a 2.26 ERA and 108 strikeouts, was taken sixth overall by the Detroit Tigers. Bard, who finished the year 8-3 with a 3.47 ERA and 90 strikeouts, was taken 28th by the Boston Red Sox. The Tar Heels are coached by Mike Fox, who in eight years at UNC, has compiled a 335-158-1 record. His overall head coaching record is 875-299-5 in 23 years of coaching. In his eight years at Carolina, Fox has taken the Tar Heels to seven Regionals and two Super Regionals.
