The Alabama volleyball team is on a 10-day, three country tour of Europe. The Tide is traveling to Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovenia and will play five matches while visiting. To keep the fans informed, the Alabama players are writing daily journals about their trip of a lifetime. Due to limited internet access in Europe, some of the journals may be a couple of days late being posted.
It has been said that a great motto to live by is Dream Often ....Dream Big. For me personally this trip has been a dream come true. Over a year ago I knew this was the right team to bring to Europe and the timing could not have been more perfect for a team who had been searching for a way to come together all throughout the spring. Our team and staff has undergone many changes and I have always lived on the motto that change is a good thing if embraced. For all of us as a “volleyball family” we have embraced all changes are headed for the future ?? and a very bright future lies ahead.
The things I will remember the most from our “Buda Rocking Experience” will certainly be cultural things we have absorbed ourselves in whether we were playing volleyball or listening to our tour guides give us the 13th century history of a city. Europe gets into your blood and when it does it is there to stay forever. I have seen every player on our team try new things, make new best friends and spread smiles to Hungarians, Slovenians and Czechs. They have completely immersed themselves into a new way of looking at life and a new way of looking at each other.
As the old saying goes, what happens in Europe Stays in Europe so I will only share a small part of our experience with you. The memories that have been made will be Binks and her dad Good Ol’ Walt posing in front of a stoic Czech Guard, Fuentez understanding the difference between guy dogs and girl dogs, Juice and Bones teaching dance lessons to a few Hungarian men, Chris dancing (yes I saw it first hand), Berger unleashing a new attitude on the court, Jill’s positive coaching demeanor and getting to know everyone, Abbi doing Harry Karry in Prague, Southside learning what a libero truly does for her team, Sandy and Sister Bobbie doing the twist on the riverboat, Bones and Daisy becoming best buds, the sharing of some good Czech medicine with friends, seeing the Mary Beth Attitude that I once knew, watching the team rally around Megan on the court, and eating Pig’s Knee (kudos to everyone who ate it!!) You made my day!! Well maybe my whole year.
As I leave Prague I will treasure our time together for a lifetime. Our bags will be packed with many awesome memories that we will relive over and over again. Work hard Tiders and use your new found spirit ?? 2006 will be full of adventures!
Ciao Ciao!!
Coach G.
