Aymara Albury and Beth Mallory, the star throwers for the Alabama women's track and field team, were honored for their achievements away from the track on Thursday when they were named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV first team. Albury and Mallory are both eligible to earn Academic All-America honors by virtue of being named first team All-District.
Albury, a chemistry major with a 3.62 GPA, has had a career year on the track. The Nassau, Bahamas native won both the 2006 SEC Indoor and Outdoor shot put championships. Albury also holds the school record in the shot both indoors and outdoors. A three-time Academic All-SEC honoree, she broke her own school record in the shot put last Saturday at the Mideast Regional Championships with a throw of 56'6.5" which also was a Bahamian national record. At the UTEP Invitational earlier this season, Albury also broke her country's hammer throw record with a toss of 190'2".
Mallory carries a 3.83 GPA in her physical education major. The Ashland, Ohio native has had a storybook career since arriving at Alabama. Mallory was the 2005 NCAA champion in the discus as well as a three-time All-American in the event. She recently won her third straight SEC discus crown becoming just the second female athlete ever in the conference to three-peat in the event. Mallory holds school records in the hammer throw, discus and the weight throw. She is also a two-time All-America in the hammer and has been named Academic All-SEC three times. The 2005 SEC Outdoor shot put champion was the high scorer at the 2005 SEC Outdoor Championships.
The duo, which led Alabama to a fourth place team finish at the Mideast Regional Championships last week, will be competing next week at the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
