
Salem Named to ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Team

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - University of Alabama junior center fielder Emeel Salem was named to ESPN the Magazine's First-Team Academic All-America team on Tuesday afternoon.
Salem, who carries a 3.9 grade-point average with a double major in Management and Spanish, becomes the eighth Alabama baseball to earn Academic All-America honors. He joins Zack Rogers (2nd team, 1972), Jeff Laubenthal (1st team, 1993), Beau Hearod (3rd team, 2001), Lance Cormier (1st team, 2002), Hearod (3rd team, 2002), Hearod (2nd team, 2003) and Gabe Scott (2nd team, 2005).
Salem is just the third First-Team Academic All-America selection for the UA baseball team, joining Laubenthal (1993) and Cormier (2002).
Earlier this season, Salem was named to the ESPN the Magazine All-District IV Academic Team. He was also named the SEC baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year in a vote by the 12 head coaches at the SEC Tournament. Salem was also named to the 2006 SEC Good Works team for his countless hours of community service.
In addition to his academic achievement, Salem was named to the College Baseball Foundation All-American team on Tuesday, as selected by a panel from the College Baseball Foundation.
Salem has appeared in 60 games for Alabama this season and leads the team with a .362 (94-for-260) average with two home runs and 27 RBI. He also leads the Tide in runs scored (63), triples (6) and stolen bases (33).
