The fourth-ranked Alabama softball team, fresh off its Region 5 championship will host the 12th seeded Stanford Cardinal this weekend as announced by the NCAA this evening.
Alabama ran through the NCAA Region 5 tournament going 3-0 with wins over Mississippi Valley State (8-0, 5 inn.) and Georgia Tech (8-5 and 7-2) while the Stanford Cardinal had to come from the loser’s bracket to win the Region 12 tournament in Fresno, California.
Alabama and Stanford have never met in the post season, although the Cardinal did make a visit to Tuscaloosa in the 2003 NCAA Regional tournament but the two teams never matched up.
The Tide and the Cardinal have met three times with Stanford owning a 2-1 series advantage. Their last meeting came at the beginning of the 2004 season when Alabama traveled to Palo Alto for the Stanford Spring Classic. Stanford won the first meeting in that tournament 4-1 while the Tide responded with a 2-1, eight-inning victory.
The two teams will get together for a single game on Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT followed by a 1:30 p.m. CT match-up on Saturday and an if necessary game at 4:00 p.m. CT on Saturday.
