BAMA CLOSES REGULAR-SEASON AT UT
The eighth-ranked and Southeastern Conference Western Division leading University of Alabama baseball team closes out the 2006 regular season with a three-game series against the Tennessee Volunteers this Thursday (May 18), Friday (May 19) and Saturday (May 20) at Lindsey Nelson Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. All three games will begin at 7 p.m. (ET) and the series finale will be televised live by CSS Sports. Alabama (36-17, 17-10 SEC) travels to Knoxville and is still in contention for the 2006 SEC Championship. The Crimson Tide trails league-leading Kentucky (41-11, 19-8 SEC) by two games heading into the last three games of the season. In order to win the SEC Championship, Alabama would need three wins against Tennessee and have Kentucky lose all three games at Georgia. Alabama could share the SEC Championship with Kentucky with three wins at Tennessee and two Kentucky losses at Georgia. Alabama, Georgia and Kentucky could all three share the SEC Championship, if Alabama wins two out of three at Tennessee and Georgia sweeps Kentucky. Alabama owns a two-game lead over Arkansas (35-17, 15-12 SEC) and Ole Miss (33-19, 15-11 SEC) in the SEC Western Division. The Crimson Tide's magic number to clinch its 11th SEC Western Division title is two headed into the final three games. Alabama wins the outright SEC Western Division with two wins at Tennessee, or one win at Tennessee and one loss each by Arkansas (vs. Auburn) and Ole Miss (at Miss. State) this weekend. Alabama is one of five teams that has already secured a spot in next week's SEC Tournament (May 24-28) at the Hoover Met. Kentucky, Georgia, Arkansas and Ole Miss will join the Crimson Tide in next week's eight-team, double-elimination tournament. Two teams -- Auburn and Florida -- have been eliminated from SEC Tournament contention. The remaining five teams are battling for the final three spots. South Carolina is at Vanderbilt this weekend and both teams need just one win to qualify for the SEC Tournament. That leaves three teams (LSU, Miss. State and Tennessee) fighting for the final spot in the SEC Tournament. Tennessee (31-21, 11-15 SEC) is tied with Miss. State (33-19, 11-15 SEC) for ninth place in the overall standings and just one game behind eighth-place LSU (33-19, 12-15 SEC) heading into the final weekend. The Volunteers have won four of their last five SEC series, including back-to-back series wins over Vanderbilt and South Carolina. Tennessee owns a 9-6 record against Eastern Division teams this season, with the lone series loss against Kentucky (Mar. 24-26). The Vols are 2-9 against the Western Division this year, with series losses to Miss. State, Arkansas, LSU and Ole Miss. Alabama and Tennessee are playing for the first time since the 2003 season. UT has won the last two series in Knoxville (2001 and 2003).
