The backcourt from last year’s Crimson Tide women’s basketball team has had an active off-season so far this spring, as senior guards Kate Mastin and Leah Drury have been busy on and off the court at the Capstone.
Mastin, a native of Boaz, completed the academic portion of her career at Alabama by earning her degree in business following the completion of the spring semester. Mastin, who was the Tide’s best outside shooter in her junior season, redshirted her first season at UA in 2002-03 but has played in all but four games in the last three seasons.
“As a coach, you love being around young ladies who take care of business on and off the court,” head coach Stephany Smith said. “Kate is one of those players who does exactly what she is supposed to do. It is a joy to have players and people like Kate who can lead the way for this program.”
Drury, who shared the point guard duties with Mastin in her junior season, has been hard at work in the gym this spring and will have the opportunity to play overseas as a member of the Athletes-in-Action team.
“I am hoping this trip will make be a better individual and a better leader,” Drury said. “I believe leadership will be a key for us next year with so many new players coming in.”
The squad, comprised of players from various schools, will travel to Spain on May 13 and will compete in games and conduct clinics for local youngsters. Drury and her teammates will return to the United States on June 3.
“This is a great opportunity for Leah,” Smith said. “Not only will it be great for her to be playing against competition on that kind of a stage, but I think this will only enhance her ability to lead a team and will bring her back to our campus as an even more well-rounded player and person.”
Mastin and Drury will each be in their final seasons of eligibility at Alabama in 2006-07.
