The Alabama volleyball team continues its spring season on Saturday, traveling to the state of Georgia for the second straight weekend to compete at Georgia Tech. The Crimson Tide played last Saturday against South Florida and Georgia in Athens.
Alabama head coach Judy Green will be looking more at how the Tide performs as opposed to the competition they will face.
“This is going to be a more tournament-like weekend,” Green said. “But what we want is to focus on our ball control, our serve and getting off to a faster start in the morning than we did last Saturday.”
Green also will have the opportunity to experiment with several lineups and is particularly interested in the play of setters Brigitte Slack and Megan Hudson.
“I think we will experiment with a couple of different lineups,” Green said. “Every opportunity that we have to play adds experience that all of our kids need. I’ll be trying to get a good gage, especially from the setters, in who is running the team well. We will run 5-1 and 6-2 offenses and we will probably stick with our lineups for the whole match the weekend as opposed to changing them for different games.”
Green is expecting both Slack and Hudson to step up their play.
“I think both setters need to elevate their level of play,” Green said. “I’m looking for a setter who will take control of the court.”
Even though the Tide will have freshmen arriving in the fall to join the squad, the focus for Green is improving the players she is working with now as Alabama prepares to make another run at the NCAA Tournament in the fall.
“We had a tough week of practice and I’m hoping to see a lot of improvement this weekend in our play,” Green said. “Our team knows the kids coming this fall, but our time is now and improving the players that we have. We don’t want to rely on freshmen. We want our team to come out of the spring a lot more seasoned.”
Alabama will compete against Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, Georgia State and Tennessee-Chattanooga.
