ALABAMA WRAPS UP HOMESTAND WITH UAB
Coming off a series win over the No. 1 ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs, the University of Alabama baseball team steps out of conference on Wednesday night to face in-state rival UAB in a 6:30 p.m. (CT) at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The UAB game will mark the end of an eight-game home stand for Alabama. This will be the first of two meetings between the Crimson Tide and Blazers this season. The teams will meet again on Wednesday, April 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hoover Met. Alabama (22-9, 7-2 SEC) is a consensus Top 15 team in the four major polls this week after its series win over Miss. State this weekend in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide is ranked as high as 10th in the Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll, its first Top 10 national ranking since May 27, 2002 when Bama was ranked fourth (NCBWA) and sixth (Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball and Baseball Weekly) in the respective polls. UAB (13-16, 0-3 C-USA) has lost 11 of its last 12 games, including a nine-game losing streak. The current skid began with a 10-3 loss at Miss. State on March 21. The Blazers opened the season with a 12-4 record before its current skid. Alabama is playing its fifth different in-state opponent on April 5 when hosting UAB. The Crimson Tide is 3-1 in the previous four games, with wins over Samford, Birmingham Southern and South Alabama and a loss to Troy. Junior CF Emeel Salem (Mountain Brook) and senior 2B Evan Bush (Rainbow City) have feasted off in-state pitching this season. Salem (7-for-6) and Bush (7-for-16) are hitting an identical .438 this season and have scored five runs apiece in four games. Salem has added two doubles, two RBI and three stolen bases, while Bush has a triple, home run and four RBI in four games. Salem also continues to be the hottest hitter in the Crimson Tide team this season. In 31 games, he is batting a team-best .359 (46-for-128) with one home run and 15 RBI. Salem also leads UA with nine doubles, 20 stolen bases, 29 runs scored and a .442 on-base percentage. He is also riding a career-best 14-game hitting streak, where he is batting .433 (26-for-60) with one home run and 10 RBI. Overall, Salem has hit safely in 28 of 31 games this year. Freshman RF Ryan Rhoden (Tuscaloosa) is batting .333 (4-for-12) against in-state teams this season, with one home run and five RBI in four games. Junior RHP Jake McCarter (Kerrville, Texas) is the only UA pitch to see action in all four games with in-state teams this year. McCarter is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA (12 IP, 12 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 16 K) in his four appearances. The UAB game will be Alabama's last home game until Wednesday, April 19 when the Tide hosts Mississippi Valley State. After Wednesday's game, the Crimson Tide embarks on a seven-game road trip to No. 1 South Carolina (April 7-9), SE Louisiana (April 12) and No. 20 LSU (April 14-16).
ALABAMA-UAB SERIES *Alabama leads the all-time series with UAB, 33-12 (.733), including a back-to-back series sweeps in 2003 and 2004.
*The Crimson Tide and Blazers spilt a home-and-home series last year. UAB won 7-1 in Birmingham, while Bama won 5-4 in Tuscaloosa.
*Dating back to the 2002 season, Alabama has won six of the last seven meetings with UAB.
*Alabama also owns a four-game winning streak in Tuscaloosa, dating back to the 2002 season.
*The Alabama-UAB series began in 1974 with the Crimson Tide sweeping the four games played that season.
