BAMA TAKES ON UAB AT HOOVER MET
The No. 6 ranked University of Alabama Crimson Tide baseball team plays its final non-conference game of the 2006 season as it takes on the UAB Blazers Wednesday, April 26 at the Hoover Met. The game is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. Alabama (31-12, 13-5 SEC) will be playing in its "unofficial" home away from home tonight when they meet the Blazers at the home of the Southern League's Birmingham Barons, the Class AA affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. The Hoover Met is also the site for the 2006 SEC Baseball Tournament (May 24-27). Alabama has enjoyed much success at the Hoover Met since its first appearance in 1989. Overall, Alabama is 27-11 (.711) in games played at the Hoover Met, including a 23-8 (.742) mark in SEC post-season play. Alabama has won four SEC Tournament Championships at the Hoover Met in 1996, 1999, 2002 and 2003. Alabama is 3-2 (.600) all-time against UAB at the Hoover Met, including a 5-4 win here on April 14, 2004. Brandon Belcher's three-run home run in the seventh inning gave the Crimson Tide the come-from-behind win. The Crimson Tide will bring a five-game winning streak into Wednesday night's game with UAB. The Crimson Tide is hitting an astounding .411 (78-for-190) during the streak with seven home runs and 48 RBI. Bama is averaging 10.2 runs and 15.6 hits per game during the streak. Senior catcher Kody Valverde leads the team with .647 (11-for-17) average over the last five games. He has added 10 runs, four doubles, one home run and eight RBI. Freshman DH Alex Avila is hitting .571 (12-for-21) during the five-game winning streak, with nine runs scored, six doubles and eight RBI. Valverde and Avila are a hitting a combined .605 (23-for-38) in the last five games, with 19 runs scored, 10 doubles, one home run and 16 RBI. Avila was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on April 24 following his performance in the Crimson Tide's series sweep of No. 16 Vanderbilt over the weekend in Tuscaloosa. Avila hit .429 (6-for-14) against the Commodores with three doubles, four runs scored and five RBI. He had his best game at UA going 4-for-6 with four runs scored and four RBI in the Tide's 14-7 win over April 22. He also tallied a career-high three doubles. Alabama and UAB met earlier this season in Tuscaloosa with the Crimson Tide posting a 4-3 win. UA scored three runs on six hits in the first inning and then held off UAB for the win. David Ferazza, Matt Downs and Ryan Rhoden had RBI singles in the first inning. Rhoden went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI in the win and scored what proved to be the deciding run in the seventh inning. UAB (15-26) snapped its school-record 19-game losing streak on April 22 with 9-7 win at Central Florida. The Blazers then scored their first series win of the 2006 season with a 14-6 victory in the series finale on Sunday.
BASEBALL TEAM WINS COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
*The University of Alabama baseball team won its second straight Community Service Award when the UA Center for Academic Student Services handed out its 2005-06 awards Monday, April 24 at the Paul W. Bryant Conference Center.
*The UA baseball team was the top men's team with more than 1,000 hours of community service during the current academic school year.
*The highlight of the season for the Crimson Tide baseball team was a weekend in south Mississippi to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina.
*Athletic Trainer Ginger Gilmore's family, who hails from Bay St. Louis, Miss., were the beneficiaries of the three-day trip for some 10-15 Crimson Tide baseball players.
*Junior center fielder Emeel Salem (Mountain Brook) was a finalist for the Paul W. Bryant Scholar-Athlete Award. Salem has a 3.90 grade point average with a double major in Marketing and Spanish. He is a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selections and five-time member of the Dean's List and President's List at UA.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
*With all the newcomers on the roster this season, several UA players have has some impressive games in their first career start for the Crimson Tide.
*A total of 13 players have started a game in 2006 for the first time in their career.
*The most recent addition to the list is first baseman Wes Henderson, who went 2-for with an RBI double in UA's 14-7 win over Vanderbilt on April 22.
*Another first time starter in the last four games is freshman shortstop Jeff Texada, who went 3-for-3 with a double and walk in his first start against Miss. Valley State on April 19.
*The Crimson Tide has had a number of other impressive first starts this season, both at the plate and on the mound.
*The most impressive first start of the season was Kyle Moore's 2-for-5, 4 RBI night in his first start against Samford on Feb. 14. He also hit a two-run home run in that game.
*Moore was the first UA player to hit a home run in his first career start since Al Hecklinski hit a home run against UL Lafayette on Feb. 14, 2003 at Minute Maid Park in Houston.
*The four RBI were the most by a UA player in his first start since Cam Walters went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI in a win over Arkansas-Little Rock on Feb. 22, 1998.
*Hunter threw eight shutout innings in his first career start against Florida International (8 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 8 K) on Feb. 26.
*Hunter's eight innings were the most by an Alabama first-time starter since Jared Woodward tossed a complete-game win over Birmingham Southern (9 IP, 4 H, R, ER, BB, 6 K) on Feb. 21, 2001.
*Woodward's nine-inning stint is the only complete game by a UA pitcher in his first career start in the Wells era.
*McCarter threw three scoreless innings in his first start against Lipscomb (3 IP, H, BB, 2 K) on March 29.
ALABAMA-UAB SERIES
*Alabama leads the all-time series with UAB, 35-13 (.729) heading into Wednesday's game at the Hoover Met.
*The Crimson Tide posted a 4-3 win over the Blazers on April 5 in Tuscaloosa.
*Dating back to the 2002 season, Alabama has won seven of the last eight meetings with UAB.
*The Crimson Tide and Blazers spilt a home-and-home series last year. UAB won 7-1 in Birmingham, while Bama won 5-4 in Tuscaloosa.
*Alabama also owns a five-game winning streak in Tuscaloosa, dating back to the 2002 season.
*The Alabama-UAB series began in 1974 with the Crimson Tide sweeping the four games played that season.
*The Crimson Tide swept a two-game series with the Blazers in 1999, winning by a combined 52-9 margin.
*Alabama beat UAB 30-4 on April 14, 1999 Young Memorial Field. The Crimson Tide smashed an NCAA record 13 home runs in the victory.
*Andy Phillips (3 HR), Brent Boyd (2 HR), Sam Bozanich (2 HR) and Jeremy Brown (2 HR) all had multiple homers for the Tide.
*Dan Chavers, Derek Wigginton and G.W. Keller also homered in the most lopsided win in series history.

*The UAB Blazers (15-26, 2-10 C-USA) snapped its school record 19-game losing streak with a 9-7 win at Central Florida on Saturday, April 22.
*It was the Blazers first win since beating North Carolina A&T 12-1 on March 18, 2006.
*The next UAB handed UCF a 16-4 loss to win its first series of the 2006 season.
*The 19-game losing streak included eight losses to Top 25 teams, including Miss. State (0-1), Southern Miss (0-3), Alabama (0-1) and Rice (0-3).
*UAB scored two runs or less eight time during the 19-game losing streak and lost eight one-run games.
*UAB began the year with a 12-4 record, but has lost 22 of their last 25 games since March 14.
*The Blazers are hitting .268 (385-for-1,437) in 41 games, with 30 home runs and 199 RBI.
*UAB averages 5.4 runs and 9.4 hits per game.
